A Reinvestigation of Podocarpium (formerly Podogonium, Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae) from the middle Miocene of Shandong Province, China.
Well-preserved fruits and leaves of a legume genus Podocarpium (formerly Podogonium) from the middle Miocene Shanwang Formation of Shandong Province, eastern China were reinvestigated. The results suggest that these specimens previously identified as Podogonium oehningense (Koenig) Kirchh. and P. knorrii (Braun) Heer actually belong to the same taxon, which can be assigned to a common species Podocarpium podocarpum (A. Braun) Herendeen from Neogene floras of central Europe. Its leaf architecture and fruit morphology are comparable to those of related genera in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae of the family Fabaceae. In combination with the cuticular anatomy, we support the viewpoint that Podocarpium A. Braun ex Stizenberger 1951 does not conform to any single extant genus. On the basis of the fossil record of this genus and related floristic assemblages, implications for biogeography and paleoecology are reviewed. Podocarpium might have originated in the early Paleogene of eastern China and then spread to other places, possibly representing a gallery forest element in the Boreotropical flora.
